Paige Barnum

Senior Architectural Designer

When did you know you wanted to be a designer?

I came to the realization well into my 20s. I was working in the music industry for Universal Music Group on a team that oversaw the design and construction of spaces such as Island Def Jam Music Group’s corner offices and listening spaces, as well as Motown’s lobby and executive conference rooms. This position was meant to be a layover while I studied for the LSAT to pursue a career in politics, but we can all see how that turned out!

Do you have any hidden talents?

I love fixing things, putting things together, and home renovation projects. Whether it’s bringing a knotted necklace back to life, balancing turntables, laying tile…you name it!

Where is your favorite travel destination?

I’d normally tell you Maui, Hawaii, but right now I cannot wait to visit a little town in Northern Michigan and hug my family!

Best advice you’ve ever received?

Never use a blinker in Manhattan. It’s a sign of weakness. And, probably why driving in New York City is so unpredictable!

What’s the one accomplishment you’re most proud of?

Surviving and thriving throughout Pratt’s M.Arch program while in my third decade of life.

Any other interesting facts about you?

  • I started a Get-Out-the-Vote campaign last summer titled, “ASK ME HOW TO VOTE” which targeted young people in underrepresented neighborhoods spanning New York, Michigan, Kansas, California, Florida, and Indiana.
  • If it has wheels or it’s on water, chances are I’ll be into it.
  • If I could come back as any animal, it would be a sea turtle. I’m passionate about ocean conservation, the natural world, and animals in general.
