XpresSpa Pivot

When XpresSpa need transformed themselves into XpresCheck to face the existential threat of COVID-19, we provided them with the rapid response and close coordination needed to make the transformation a success.

XpresSpa has been a common sight in our nation’s airports. Their retail locations tempted weary travelers with an opportunity to indulge a little through a variety of beauty and health services. The spread of COVID-19 in early 2020, with its catastrophic impact on air travel, changed all that. Sensing another way they could give customers peace of mind, the company has temporarily rebranded itself as XpresCheck, and installed “pop-up” locations in multiple airports that offer COVID-19 testing for passengers before they embark on planes.

XpresCheck Process

We were working with the client on their spa locations when COVID-19 hit, and smoothly u-turned right alongside them as their business model changed overnight. This has required us to coordinate the multiple parties typically involved in airport projects (local authorities, contractors, vendors, and the client’s own design team) under unusually accelerated schedules.

Since March 2020, we’ve assisted them with seven locations nationwide: two each at Boston’s Logan and Newark’s Liberty airports, and one each at Houston’s George Bush, New York’s John F. Kennedy, and New York’s LaGuardia airports. These locations range in size from 400 to 1,200 square feet, and feature rooms where nurses can take blood and nasal samples, small labs to process rapid tests, and storage for ones that need to be processed off-site.
