Seventh Day Adventist Church

Bronx, NY

The New Seventh Day Adventist Church in the Bronx is located at the corner of Seward Street and White Plains Road. Its iconic peak at the corner signals the importance of this building for this neighborhood, and the colorful wall panels along the base express the diversity of the church members. Both elements define the first impression and give the new church its distinctive look. The new church replaces the existing church on Washington Street, is larger in size, and provides more room for its growing community.

The project consists of a 44,500-square-foot- church with a sanctuary seating 800, a community center with fellowship wall, food pantry, chapel, classrooms, offices, and a gym. A Narthex with two entrances, reception, and a social hall connects the sanctuary and community center. Outdoor seating, parking and a roof garden complete the program.

The modern design’s iconographic elements are derived from the Seventh Adventist Church’s specific history, and express the specific character of this church. The layout unifies its three components to create a building which stands its ground amongst both existing and new high-rise residential buildings.
